Durga Puja is the most important and grandly celebrated festival in West Bengal, especially in Kolkata. It honors the victory of Goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil.
The festival usually takes place in the Bengali month of Ashwin (September–October). The whole festival for five days – from Shashthi to Dashami.
In Bengal, Durga Puja is not just a religious event but a cultural phenomenon. All city streets are decorated with artistic pandals, colorful lights and more elements. Families dress in traditional clothes and enjoy cultural performances, music etc. The entire state comes alive with devotion, creativity and celebration.
The immersion of the idol on Vijayadashami marks the end of the celebration with the hope of the Goddess’s return the next year.
Durga Puja reflects the spirit, art, unity, and devotion of the Bengali people and has been recognized by UNESCO as an “Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity” in 2021.
