Govardhan Puja 2025 I Annakut Puja: Date, Timings, Wishes, Rituals & Story

Govardhan Puja, also known as Annakut Puja, is one of the most sacred days in the Diwali festival series. Usually, Govardhan Puja is celebrated the day after Diwali.

It marks the day when Lord Krishna defeated Lord Indra. However, in some years, there can be a one-day gap between Diwali and Govardhan Puja.

This festival is celebrated to honor Lord Krishna’s divine act of lifting the Govardhan Hill to protect the villagers of Gokul from heavy rain and floods.

It is a day that reminds devotees about faith, humility, and the power of devotion over pride.

Krishna questioned why they should worship Indra when it was actually the Govardhan Hill that provided them with food, shelter, and grazing grounds for their cattle.

Hearing Krishna’s reasoning, the villagers started worshipping Govardhan Hill instead of Indra. Angered by this, Lord Indra sent torrential rains to destroy Gokul.

To protect the villagers, Lord Krishna lifted the Govardhan Hill on his little finger for seven days. Realizing his mistake, Indra stopped the rains and apologized to Krishna. Since then, Govardhan Puja is celebrated as a symbol of humility, protection, and the importance of nature.

Govardhan Puja Rituals

1. Annakut Preparation

Devotees prepare a large variety of vegetarian dishes, sweets, and delicacies made of grains, pulses, and milk. These are arranged in the form of a mountain, symbolizing Govardhan Hill, and offered to Lord Krishna.

2. Govardhan Parikrama

Many devotees perform a ritual walk (parikrama) around a model of Govardhan Hill or visit the real Govardhan Hill in Mathura to seek blessings.

3. Puja and Bhajans

Lord Krishna’s idol is decorated beautifully and special prayers, aartis, and bhajans are sung in his honor. Devotees express gratitude for food, shelter, and protection.
